1. How did you get started writing?
I have been a medical journalist for almost 20 years. Back in 2014, a friend of mine dared me to take one of my funny paramedic stories and do NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It’s a contest where you try to write the first draft of a book in the month of November. I did it and loved it. I’ve never looked back.
2. Out of all your books, which one is your favourite and why?
I think that first book, Extreme Medical Services, is my favorite. It combined my love for fantasy stories and health care in one place with a series about paramedics who take care of supernatural creatures.
3. If your friends were asked to describe you in one word, what would it be?
Genuine. I always try to be just me and no one else.
4. What is your favorite thing to do outside of writing?
Genuine. I always try to be just me and no one else.
5. What do you love most about the genre you write?
My primary genre is Urban Fantasy where I write what I like to call “Fun Fantasy Reads”. I love it because I believe there is all sorts of magic and miracles all around us that our busy modern lives keep us from seeing. I write about the fun things I think happen in the margins, just out of the corner of your eye. Don’t blink. You’ll miss it.
6. What do you want readers to take from your books?
I want them to have a good time. My books are positive stories of triumph over evil, showing people of all kinds helping each other to succeed.
7. Describe yourself in 3 words.
Husband, Father, Storyteller
8. What made you decide to write in your current genre?
See #5
9. Tell us about your current release/or new release?
I’m getting ready to release book 8 in my Extreme Medical Services series. It’s called “The Paramedic’s Amazon” and it features a new character also featured in my short story “Birth of a Were-Cat Medic” in the HellCats anthology.
10. What does your writing space look like?
I write at a desk in the corner of our master bedroom which also holds my audio equipment which I use to conduct interviews as a healthcare journalist. It’s cozy.
11. What’s the one piece of technology you can’t live without?
My phone. It connects me with my family and my readers.
12. Do you find it hard to kill off your characters?
I find it very hard. Sometimes it is needed to further the story, but I don’t like it. My wife actually saved a character in my first series because she wanted him to live. So I found a way that he survived and went on to become a favorite character for readers.
13. How much of your characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?
I think I can’t help but include a piece of myself in my characters, male and female. They all represent either something I see in myself or something I wish was there.
14. What are you working on now? Can you share a teaser of it with our readers?
I just wrapped up a series with “Huntress Defender” book 6 of the Huntress Clan Saga. The heroine, our Huntress Quinn Faust is snarky and badass. She has some memorable quotes in all her books but one of my favorites is in this last one. She laughs at the bad guys and says, “Outnumbered is my favorite way to fight.”
15. Is there one genre that you have not written in yet, but would love to try writing?
I have a story begging me to write it. It is epic classical fantasy.
16. What do you do when a flash of inspiration hits you at an inopportune moment?
I pull out my phone. The memo app is my notepad and I use it all the time.
17. What keeps you going while writing?
I’m a Full-Time writer at this point. Journalism has become a part-time gig now. I treat writing as a job. Words don’t write themselves so I make sure my butt is in the seat and I’m writing something each and every day.
18. What’s next for you?
I’ll be starting on the next three books in my Accidental Champion series this fall. It’s a fantasy story set inside a video game.
19. Where can we find you on the internet?
